Let’s Talk Industrial Halogen Heaters
Ever wonder how those shortwave infrared (SWIR) heaters actually work? It’s pretty simple. You’ve got a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz tube, pressurized with a mix of halogen gas. The gas is the secret sauce here. It keeps the filament from evaporating too fast, which lets it run way hotter. The result? A concentrated beam of heat that hits your target instantly. No waiting around. The Power Side of Things We build these tubes to pack a lot of punch into a small space. If you’re looking at a high-voltage lamp—say, a 400V unit—you’re really pushing for maximum heat density. This is a lifesaver for things like PET bottle blowing or rapid curing. In those jobs, you need the material to hit its glass transition temperature in a heartbeat. High wattage equals a faster ramp-up. But a word of caution: these high-output tubes gethot. Really hot. Make sure your cooling fans and housing can handle the load, or you’re going to fry your wiring. The Build and the Fit We use quartz glass because it doesn’t crack under thermal shock and lets the heat pass right through. Depending on what you’re doing, we can add a specialized coating to shift the heat spectrum or keep grime and contaminants off the tube. As for the plugs, we stick with standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re basically drop-in replacements for most industrial ovens. They fit tight and keep the electrical contact solid, so you don’t have to worry about arcing at the terminals. Putting Them to Work You’ll see these all over the place—shrink tunnels, powder coating lines, plastic forming. The real win here is the response time. Unlike those forced-air ovens that have to warm up the entire room of air first, these lamps just heat the part. It’s direct. It’s fast. It saves a ton of energy and shaves time off your cycle. One last tip: if you’re swapping these into an old rig,double-check your reflector alignment. If it’s off, you’re wasting energy and risking hot spots on your product. Keep it centered and you’re good to go.
