When you’re working with high-end carbon fiber, you’re basically playing a balancing act with heat. You need enough power to get the job done, but you can’t just blast it and hope for the best. For our MS JP7 systems, we use custom shortwave IR lamps. They’re built to trigger that rapid polymerization quickly, but they do it Without messing up the strength of the composite. The heat problem Here’s the thing: most people run into the “skin effect.” That’s when the surface of the fabric looks perfect—maybe even burnt—while the inside is still wet and uncured. It’s a nightmare. We fixed this by focusing on a high wattage-to-length ratio. Because we use shortwave radiation, the energy actually digs deep into the layers instead of just sitting on top. You get a cure that’s uniform from the top down. It just works. Built for the chaos of the shop floor These aren’t your average lightbulbs. We use high-purity quartz because these things go through some serious thermal shock when you’re cycling them rapidly. We also reinforced the connectors. Why? Because high-speed lines vibrate, and the last thing you need is a lamp shaking loose in the middle of a run. One heads-up, though: when you’re running at peak wattage, these things gethot. Seriously hot. Make sure your cooling fans and exhaust are up to the task, or you might find your housing starting to warp. Putting them to work If you already have MS JP7 arrays, these just drop right in. We spent a lot of time on the footprint so the focal point hits exactly where the fabric meets the belt. And since shortwave IR doesn’t waste time heating up the air around it, you don’t have to sit around waiting for the machine to warm up. You can get the line moving in seconds. Now, there is a trade-off. All that energy means the lamps can burn out faster than the low-wattage stuff, especially if your voltage spikes. My advice? Use a stabilized power supply. It’ll keep your cycles consistent and stop you from replacing tubes more often than you have to.
