
Shortwave vs. Medium-Wave: Which IR Lamp Actually Works for Your Bruckner System?
Picking the right IR lamps for fabric drying isn’t about finding a “winner.” It’s really just about how the heat hits your material. If you get the wavelength wrong on a high-speed Bruckner line, you’re looking at two options: scorched fabric or a massive electric bill because you’re wasting energy. The deep dive on penetration Shortwave lamps run hot. Really hot. That radiation punches deep into the fibers, which is exactly what you want for thick materials or those tricky synthetic blends that need heat all the way to the core. Medium-wave is a different beast. These run cooler and are great at grabbing onto water molecules. So, if you’re just trying to get surface moisture out of organic fibers, MW is the way to go. It’s just more efficient for that specific job. Quartz and the heat struggle We use high-purity quartz for the envelopes because the thermal shock is brutal. Quartz can take the hit when you’re cycling the power on and off without cracking. But here’s the thing: shortwave lamps are aggressive. If you’re running high-wattage SW tubes, your reflectors need to be mirror-perfect. If there’s even a bit of oxidation on those reflectors, the lamp will overheat and burn out. It’s a quick way to kill a perfectly good tube. The real-world trade-offs Most of our Bruckner-compatible lamps are drop-in replacements, so the installation part is easy. But you still have to make a choice about your workflow. Shortwave gets you up to temperature fast. Lightning fast. But that speed puts a lot of stress on the quartz. You’ll get your drying time down, but you’ll be replacing tubes more often. It’s a balancing act. You can push the wattage to shave a few seconds off your line speed, but just know that your maintenance schedule will feel the pinch.
