
Getting Your Infrared Curing Right (Without the Headaches)
I’ve spent time in about 2,000 different powder coating shops, and I keep seeing the same frustrating pattern. A shop buys lamps that look great on a spec sheet, but once they’re installed, the parts just aren’t curing right. Usually, it’s not the powder’s fault. It’s almost always a mismatch between the lamp and the actual environment—either the heat is hitting the part unevenly, or the lamps are burning out way too fast. The Voltage Trap To get powder to gel quickly, you need a fast climb in temperature. That’s why we lean on shortwave infrared (SWIR) emitters. But here’s the thing: the voltage has to be spot on. If you try to run a 230V lamp on a 200V line, you’re losing a massive amount of heat. You’ll be wondering why your parts aren’t hitting that 180°C-200°C sweet spot. On the flip side, if you push too much voltage, you’ll fry the filament in no time. We focus on balancing the wattage per linear meter so you get a consistent bake without scorching the edges of your work. Built for the Grind Industrial ovens are brutal environments. That’s why we use heavy-wall quartz glass. It can handle the shock of being turned on and off rapidly without cracking. As for the connections, we stick with R7s or SK15. Why? Because they just work. They slide right in and, more importantly, they don’t shake loose when your conveyor system is humming along. We also add a special coating to the quartz. It pushes the heat forward toward your part instead of letting it bleed off into the ceiling. It’s a simple tweak that saves a lot of electricity. Real-World Trade-offs Listen, high-intensity lamps are powerful, but they’re hungry. You can’t just plug these into a standard wall outlet and hope for the best. You’ll need beefy contactors and a solid PID controller to keep the temperature from spiking. And don’t forget your fans. If your housing isn’t cooled properly, the connectors will oxidize, get brittle, and eventually fail. We don’t care about fancy bells and whistles. We care about raw heat and a perfect mechanical fit. As long as your electrical panel can handle the load, these lamps will do the heavy lifting for you.
