
Stop the Fog: Keeping Your Reggiani IR Lamps Alive
If you’ve spent any time running fabric drying lines on Reggiani machines, you know the struggle. You’re dealing with a massive amount of evaporated water. The problem is, that steam doesn’t just vanish into thin air. It clings. It sticks right to the quartz envelopes of your IR lamps, creating a layer of “fog.” Once that condensation sets in, you get hot spots. And once you have hot spots, your lamps burn out way faster than they should. It’s a headache nobody needs. Why this happens It comes down to how light and water play together. When droplets sit on a quartz tube, they mess with how the IR energy moves. Instead of the heat heading straight into the fabric, the moisture traps it right there on the glass. This creates a ton of thermal stress. You’ll notice it most in your high-output modules—basically anywhere there’s a huge temperature gap between the hot lamp and the humid air around it. A better way to handle it We decided to tackle this by changing the environment around the lamp. We redesigned the airflow so there’s a constant curtain of dry air sweeping across the tube. It basically pushes the vapor away before it ever has a chance to settle. But we didn’t stop there. We switched to a high-purity quartz with a special surface treatment. It makes the glass hydrophobic. In plain English? Water hates it. Instead of beading up and causing trouble, the moisture just slides right off. This keeps your heat consistent across the entire width of the fabric. The catch Now, there is a trade-off. This setup uses more air. You’ll need to make sure your blowers can handle the CFM required to keep that air curtain strong. If your airflow dips, the anti-fog protection disappears. You’re right back to square one with condensation and failing lamps. Getting it running The good news is that these modules are simple drop-in replacements for standard Reggiani setups. You don’t have to mess with your control cabinet or rewire anything. Just swap the modules, double-check your air pressure, and you’re good to go. It keeps the lamps running longer and, more importantly, stops those mid-shift failures that kill your productivity and ruin your day.
