Let’s Talk Halogen Quartz Heating Tubes

If you need a massive amount of heat, fast, these are your go-to. Basically, we take a tungsten filament, wrap it in high-purity quartz, and fill the whole thing with a halogen gas mix. Why the gas? It keeps the filament from evaporating too quickly. This means the lamp lasts longer, even when you’re pushing it to temperatures that would melt a standard IR bulb.

Getting the Power Right

When you’re picking a tube, it all comes down to voltage and wattage. That’s what controls your heat density. If you cram high wattage into a short tube, you get an incredibly intense heat zone. If you’re running 230V or 400V systems, the ramp-up is nearly instant. This is a lifesaver when you only have a few seconds to soften a material before it moves down the line. But here’s the catch: that kind of power puts a lot of stress on your gear. Make sure your wiring can actually handle the current draw. If you skip that check, you’re looking at burnt-out terminals. Not fun.

The Build and the Bits

We use quartz glass because it doesn’t expand much when it gets hot and it lets short-wave radiation pass right through. For the connectors, we usually stick with R7s or Sk15. They click in tight and don’t rattle loose when the machine is vibrating. You might also see some tubes with a special coating. That’s just to tweak how the heat hits your target or to give the glass a bit more protection.

Putting Them to Work

You’ve probably seen these in PET bottle blowing or plastic shrink wrapping. They give you that “instant-on” heat that makes polymers pliable without turning your entire machine into an oven. They’re pretty easy to swap into most industrial oven arrays. Just one huge warning:quartz hates oil. If you touch the glass with your bare hands while installing them, the oils from your skin create a hot spot. Once that happens, the tube will crack. Simple as that.Wear gloves.
